Science, religion, and literature are all vital methods for gaining these deeper appreciations for the strangeness and wonder of what surrounds us. Places become dear to us through familiarity but also through experiences of defamiliarization, or experiences of enchantment, when what we thought we knew or understood about a place is transformed by deeper levels of perception and imagination. Kristine Eberhard’s artwork will be on display in the Canyon Community Center until Nov. In 2011, he was named Outstanding Photographer of the Year by the North American Nature Photography Association and has just been named recipient of that organization’s Lifetime Achievement Award. A regular contributor to Arizona Highways and National Geographic magazines, he is the author of ten wilderness-advocacy, large-format books, among them “Frog Mountain Blues,” “Stone Canyons of the Colorado Plateau,” and “The Secret Forest.” His photo “Stone Canyon” was selected by the International League of Conservationist Photographers as one of the 40 best nature photographs of all time. Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Jack Dykinga will share his images while discussing his life as a photojournalist and conservationist at the Historic Rockville Church on Oct.
Z-Arts will show a critically acclaimed documentary at 7 p.m.
